Cal Ripken honored in RI for role in longest game
PAWTUCKET, RI – (AP) Hall of Fame baseball player Cal Ripken Jr. has been honored in Rhode Island for participating in the longest game in professional baseball history.
Ripken was honored at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket on Wednesday. He was playing for the Rochester Red Wings in 1981 when the team battled Pawtucket Red Sox in 33 innings over two nights.
Pawtucket, with players like Wade Boggs and Marty Barrett, ultimately won the matchup
Ripken was a longtime shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles and is known as the "Iron Man" for breaking Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played.
He was in Rhode Island to discuss an initiative pairing law enforcement officials with at-risk youth at a meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General in Providence.
