Dover commission holds forum on slavery apology
DOVER, Del. – (AP) Dover officials are opening debate on a proposal to ask the state legislature to issue a formal apology for slavery.
The Dover Human Relations Commission plans a community meeting on Wednesday to discuss whether the proposed resolution should be forwarded to state lawmakers.
The meeting will be the first major step in a revived effort to ask the Dover City Council to recommend the proposal to the legislature. An effort in May 2007 was halted when the council tabled the document on a 5-4 vote, then returned it to the commission with a request that the public have more opportunity to review it. The council also asked the commission to consult with state human relations officials.
The commission renewed the proposal this year following a number changes in its membership.
