In this edition of Eastern Shore Focus, we'll talk with Dr. Thelma B. Thompson, President of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

Dr. Thompson has appeared on this program several times before, and today she's here to tell listeners about some of the more recent accomplishments of the University - and how it's fulfilling its mission as a land-grant institution through reaching out to the local community, as well as providing much-needed training developing countries.

A native of Jamaica, Dr. Thompson has taught at many different levels of education, from elementary school - all the way up to teaching English and literature at large institutions such as Howard University and the City University of New York. And she also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Norfolk State University.

In July of 2002, Dr. Thompson was chosen for position of President of University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and since that time the University has continued to grow and expand its influence both here on the Eastern Shore - as well as the rest of the region and even overseas. In fact, UMES is one of the fastest growing institutions within the larger system of State Universities in Maryland.

Dr. Thompson will discuss some of the larger achievements of the University, including student growth, athletics, and the expansion of research into fields such as aerospace engineering and environmental issues.

She'll also talk about how UMES is both fulfilling its mission as a land-grant institution and helping to meet the needs of the Lower Shore community - through programs centering on poultry management, and pharmacy training.
