Brief Synopsis:
On December 19, 2008, some 12 students graduated from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) with a Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM). These students come from a variety of backgrounds, with some hailing from such nearby locales as Cambridge and Pocomoke, Maryland - and others hailing from as far away as Istanbul in Turkey, and South Korea.
A lot of these students will inevitably go on to work for major hospitality employers, such as Hyatt Hotels, Red Lobster and TGI Friday's chain of restaurants.
However, the underlying goal of the Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) Department is not only to be proficient in a restaurant or a hotel space, but also to excel in the management side of those same operations.
One such learning opportunity took place on Friday, November 14, 2008, in the form of a "Special Gourmet Dinner" which was hosted by HRM students at the UMES Richard A. Henson Center. The goal of the dinner was to raise funds towards the construction of a primary school to be used by needy children, in the African Republic of Uganda.
Later in today's program, we'll talk with Mr. Richard Gormley - an HRM faculty member who helped to facilitate the event. We'll also talk with some of the students who happened to be preparing for the Special Gourmet Dinner.
But first we'll talk with Dr. Ernest Boger, the Chair of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Management in the UMES School of Business & Technology.
