Brief Synopsis:
In this program, we're going to focus on two African-American gentlemen who have excelled in their respective crafts. One by expressing his artistic creativity, and the other through his leadership on the gridiron.
We'll start with Bryan Collier, an award-winning book illustrator and painter, whose artwork was on display at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's Mosely Gallery throughout the month of February 2009.
Bryan grew up in Pocomoke City, Maryland as the youngest of six children. But even as a young boy, his interest in art was encouraged both at home and at school. It was there that he began developing a unique style of painting that incorporated watercolors and collage.
Today, Mr. Collier is a successful children's book illustrator and he also creates his own individual studio pieces. Bryan lives and works in New York City's Harlem neighborhood - where he also volunteers with young people and strives to be a positive role model for African-American children, as well as children of all backgrounds.
And later in the program, we'll talk with Art Shell. Mr. Shell is a former NFL player and head coach of the Oakland Raiders. He also holds the distinction of becoming the second-ever African American head coach in the history of the NFL. And he was inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame in 1989.
Shell was also a graduate of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (Class of 1968) - back when it was still called Maryland State College. Since then, he's hosted the UMES Art Shell Celebrity Golf Classic.
