Brief Synopsis:
Jeanne du Nord is a locally-based author, artist and playwright, who moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia after doing graduate studies at the University of Virginia Charlottesville in 1963. Since 1970, she's lived at the Linden Hill residence in Princess Anne, Maryland.
To say that Mrs. du Nord is multi-talented would be an understatement. Among her many achievements as both writer and artist: she's written books about history in Britain and Europe; illustrated a book on cats; and written a single-set, two-act play set on Maryland's Eastern Shore during the romantic steamboat era.
Now she's written a book entitled "Makepeace: The Roots of American Liberty" -- a 308 page historical narrative set between the years 1659 and 1667. It chronicles the adventures and drama of the people who settled along the Annemessex and Manokin Rivers on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay.
"Makepeace" was the name of a home located in Crisfield, Maryland - which was one of the settings of Ms. du Nord's book. She says the name "Makepeace" also served as a useful metaphor for describing the prevailing attitude of religious tolerance that emerged during the mid-17th century on the Eastern Shore.
I invited Ms. du Nord to appear on this program to talk more about her book, and also to discuss some of the interesting historical research she's uncovered regarding this colonial period on the Eastern Shore.
This is Part 1 of our interview, recorded on July 14, 2009.
