Feed additive could reduce chicken waste
DOVER, DE – (AP) University of Delaware researchers believe an additive in feed given to broiler chickens could reduce the amount of phosphorus in chicken waste.
Reducing the amount of phosphorus in chicken manure would be beneficial to the environment because less phosphorous would end up in soil and groundwater.
High levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in area waterways has been blamed for rapid algae and seaweed growth that can deprive fish of oxygen and harm the habitat.
Researcher William Saylor found that the addition of an enzyme to chicken feed lowers the phosphorous level in the waste.
