No seat belt traffic stop leads police to $9000 in stolen clothes
REHOBOTH BEACH, DE – (AP) Delaware State Police have arrested two people stopped for not wearing seat belts after a trooper found nearly $9,000 worth of stolen clothes in their car.
A state trooper stopped 32-year-old Juan Rayo Romero and 52-year-old Maria Gomez Reyez, both of New York City, on Sunday night on Coastal Highway in Sussex County.
Police say the two from Queens weren't wearing seat belts when they drove by the trooper and neither of them had a driver's license. After they were stopped, the trooper looked in the van and saw lots of clothes inside special plastic bags designed to fool shoplifting sensors at stores.
Police say the merchandise was worth nearly $9,000 and was stolen from 12 different outlet stores in the Rehoboth Beach area.
