Slots opponents keep afar from gambling interests

ANNAPOLIS, MD – (AP) Opponents of slot machine gambling in Maryland are emphasizing their stand against accepting campaign money from gambling interests.

Marylanders United to Stop Slots and StopSlotsMaryland have vowed not to take any money from gambling interests in nearby states. Some say some gambling interests in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia would like to see the slots referendum defeated to avoid increasing competition.

The groups were reacting to statements issued by a pro-slots group that issued a statement saying the opponents hadn't ruled out accepting gambling interest money.

The group, For Maryland, Our Future, has not taken the same pledge to avoid gambling industry contributions.
