State police contacting plaintiffs in test bias case
DOVER, Del. (AP) - – Delaware State Police Superintendent Colonel
Thomas MacLeish says efforts are being made to contact black
trooper applicants who weren't hired during the 1990s because of a
test biased against blacks.
Under a federal court decree issued in September, the state
police must pay those recruits and give 12 of them priority for new
job openings with the police force.
MacLeish says some of the former recruits have applied for
September's training academy. The exact number has not been
disclosed due to ongoing court proceedings.
The test measured reading comprehension and writing skills. It
was dropped in 1999.
The settlement included a one-point-four million dollar
payout.
