UMES gets fundraising help from national radio personality

PRINCESS ANNE, MD – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore [UMES] is in the midst of a unique fundraising campaign for student scholarships, with critical help from Tom Joyner -- the nationally syndicated radio personality.

Mr. Joyner heads The Tom Joyner Foundation , which has been help to raise money for Historically Black Colleges and Universities [HBCUs] since 1998. And this year, his foundation has chosen UMES as its "School of the Month" for August 2009.

It's part of a multi-faceted media campaign designed to encourage alumni, corporations, individuals and radio listeners to contribute to the university's scholarship fund.

"The Tom Joyner Morning Show" airs in 115 markets around the country and reaches nearly eight million listeners every week. And the Tom Joyner Foundation aims to help students overcome financial difficulties and stay enrolled at HBCUs across the country.

This is the second time the university has been selected as a "School of the Month" for the Tom Joyner Foundation. The foundation has raised more than $25 million over the past seven years to help thousands of students at some 80 historically black colleges.
