UMES science center named for Sarbanes
ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, MD – (AP) The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is honoring former U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes by naming its marine science center for him.
The Paul S. Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center was dedicated Monday at Assateague Island.
State and local leaders attended the ceremony. UMES President Thelma Thompson thanked Sarbanes for his extended service to the nation, Maryland and the Eastern Shore.
Sarbanes is a Salisbury native and said he was pleased to give back to UMES. He recalled his high school basketball team scrimmaged with the team from UMES, then known as Maryland State College.
