WVa. senators revive vetoed Chesapeake Bay measure
CHARLESTON, WV – (AP) West Virginia lawmakers are reviving another bill vetoed during their regular session, this one aimed at helping to protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Eight West Virginia counties fall within the watershed. The measure addresses nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous used for agriculture that can wash into the bay's numerous tributaries. It proposes to allow state officials to set up a system of trading and offsets to help limit discharges.
Gov. Joe Manchin nixed the bill after finding provisions conflicted with federal law. But he also encouraged lawmakers to fix that flaw.
Senators took that advice late Wednesday, unanimously passing a corrected version as part of the extended session that began Tuesday.
The bill now goes to the House.
