California’s Norte Fire Damages Homes as Thousands Face Evacuation Orders

The Norte Fire in Orange County, California, damaged or destroyed at least six homes as flames spread through the San Juan Capistrano area, prompting evacuation orders affecting approximately 16,000 people.

The wildfire began in San Clemente on Friday before spreading toward neighboring San Juan Capistrano. Authorities issued evacuation orders covering about 6,000 homes as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

According to reports cited by Al Jazeera, evacuation shelters opened in both cities as crews responded to the growing fire. Helicopters were deployed to drop water on the flames while ground crews worked to slow the spread and protect nearby communities.

The Orange County Fire Authority reported that the fire had burned approximately 188 hectares, while Cal Fire estimated the affected area at around 231 hectares by Friday evening. The differing figures reflect estimates reported by the two agencies at that time.

Officials urged residents and others to stay away from the affected areas as firefighting operations continued.

High Temperatures and Santa Ana Winds Fuel Fire Risk

Unusually high temperatures, low humidity, and strong Santa Ana winds contributed to the rapid spread of the Norte Fire. Meteorologists reported wind gusts of approximately 55 to 90 kilometers per hour in coastal areas.

The strongest winds were expected on Friday, while hot and dry conditions could continue through Saturday night, increasing concerns about further fire spread.

The combination of powerful winds and dry weather can make wildfire containment more difficult by pushing flames into new areas and carrying embers beyond active fire lines.

Other Southern California Fires Add to Concerns

Elsewhere in Southern California, utility companies and authorities faced additional challenges as strong winds increased wildfire and infrastructure risks. In neighboring Los Angeles County, tens of thousands of people were reported to be without electricity as officials sought to reduce the risk of wind-related electrical sparks.

Firefighters were also responding to the Bryson Fire near Malibu and the Henderson Fire in San Diego County. The Henderson Fire affected the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base and led to freeway closures.

With several fires affecting the region, authorities continued to focus on containment efforts, public safety, and keeping residents away from hazardous areas.

Residents in affected communities should follow official evacuation instructions and monitor updates from local emergency management agencies and fire authorities.
