Where People Are Moving in Missouri: 8 Cities Seeing Population Growth

Missouri’s population growth is increasingly concentrated in suburban communities and regional job centers, with several cities adding residents as demand for housing expands beyond established urban areas.

The state surpassed 6.27 million residents in 2025, according to the figures cited in the original report. Much of the growth highlighted in the data is concentrated around the Kansas City and Springfield metropolitan areas, as well as communities in St. Charles County west of St. Louis.

Affordable housing options, access to employment, schools, highways and expanding commercial development are among the factors that can make these communities attractive to households. At the same time, population gains vary considerably across Missouri, with some cities growing much faster than others.

Eight cities stand out in the reported 2020-to-2025 population figures: Republic, Lake Saint Louis, Nixa, Wentzville, Lee’s Summit, O’Fallon, Columbia and Kansas City.
