BATON ROUGE, La. — First lady Melania Trump announced a multimillion-dollar partnership between Louisiana State University (LSU) and her Fostering the Future initiative on Saturday, creating new scholarship opportunities for students who have experienced the foster care system.
The partnership is backed by more than $7 million in private donations, which will establish an endowment fund to help LSU students from foster care pursue higher education. According to the White House, Baton Rouge-based electrical contracting company MMR Group Inc. pledged $5 million, while additional donors through the LSU Foundation contributed more than $2 million.
Speaking at an event with LSU President Wade Rousse, Trump said the initiative would give young people from foster care greater educational opportunities and long-term stability.
“This achievement will give young people from foster care an anchor of stability, a strong educational foundation and a chance to build a wonderful life,” she said.
LSU and Alabama Students Receive Foster Care Scholarships
LSU currently has 14 students participating in the scholarship program, while the University of Alabama has nine. Across 26 colleges and universities, the initiative is supporting 100 students during the current semester, according to Trump.
The program was also highlighted across the LSU campus and at Tiger Stadium ahead of Saturday’s football game between LSU and Alabama.
LSU President Wade Rousse presented the first lady with an LSU football helmet featuring the “Be Best” logo and a team jersey displaying the “Be Best” patch. He said every LSU player would wear the patch during the game.
Rousse emphasized the importance of making higher education accessible to students who have experienced foster care.
“At LSU, we believe talent is everywhere but we understand that opportunity is not,” Rousse said.
He added that students who have experienced foster care have already shown resilience and determination, and that circumstances outside their control should not prevent them from receiving a life-changing college education.
Trump also addressed the broader responsibility to support young people in foster care.
“As adults, we have a moral obligation to our children, especially those in foster care. But, as you know, we must act to truly make a difference. The foster care community doesn’t need words,” she said.
She concluded her remarks by encouraging attendees to enjoy the football game.
Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future Initiative
Melania Trump began focusing on foster care issues after Donald Trump’s first presidential term ended in 2021. She later established the Fostering the Future initiative to provide resources, educational support, and scholarship opportunities for young people who have experienced foster care.
The program is an extension of her Be Best campaign, which was her signature initiative during her husband’s first administration. LSU is among more than 20 colleges and universities nationwide participating in the effort.
Earlier this year, the first lady visited Capitol Hill to encourage lawmakers to approve legislation expanding services for young people in foster care. The proposed measures would update a decades-old program and broaden access to support. The legislation passed the House and is awaiting consideration in the Senate.

During an April appearance before the House Ways and Means Committee, Trump discussed the challenges young people face after leaving foster care. She pointed to difficulties accessing housing and transportation, along with other obstacles that can affect educational performance and future financial independence.
“We can close this gap,” she told committee members. “New legislation for the foster care community is a moral imperative.”
Last November, she also spearheaded an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that brought together federal agencies, colleges and universities, private businesses, and charitable organizations to expand educational and employment opportunities for people who have experienced foster care.
She subsequently established Fostering the Future Together, an international expansion of the initiative involving more than 45 countries.
Melania Trump Attends LSU-Alabama Football Game
The scholarship announcement took place ahead of the LSU Tigers’ highly anticipated matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The two Southeastern Conference programs are longtime regional rivals, and both teams entered the week in contention for a College Football Playoff berth.
Thousands of fans gathered on campus before kickoff, with many recording the first lady’s motorcade as it traveled through the university grounds.
Donald Trump previously attended two LSU games as president. He watched LSU face Alabama in 2019 and later attended the team’s January 2020 national championship victory over Clemson in New Orleans. Melania Trump accompanied him to the championship game.
The president was not scheduled to attend Saturday’s LSU-Alabama matchup.
